Explore Your StoryMost of us inherit ideas about who we should be, what success should look like, and what we must do to be loved. These stories often serve us well. They help us navigate the world and build meaningful lives. But eventually, some of these stories may begin to feel limiting—if not downright suffocating. Instead of expanding our lives, they begin to diminish them.
If there’s a story you’re ready to question—or perhaps even let go of—grab a journal and consider these questions:
1. Which story feels most familiar to you?
I have to prove myself.
I have to keep everyone happy.
I have to be strong and capable.
I have to stay in control.
I have to look good.
I should be grateful and not want more.
It is too late to change.
I am responsible for everyone else.
I cannot disappoint people.
Or __________
2. When did you first learn this story? How did you come to believe this was expected of you? Consider your family, your culture, and your earliest experiences.
3. How has this story helped you? What has it allowed you to achieve, avoid, or become?
4. What has this story cost you? What toll has it taken on your energy, relationships, creativity, health, or sense of self?
5. How does this story still shape your choices today? Think about the decisions you make, the risks you avoid, and the parts of yourself you hide.
6. What are you afraid might happen if you stopped living this story? Would you disappoint someone? Fail? Lose your identity?
7. Is that fear actually true? What once protected you may now be standing between you and a more honest life.
8. Who might you be without this story? What would you do differently? What might become easier, more honest, or more joyful?
9. What story would you rather live by now? Complete these sentences:
I no longer need to believe that…
I’m ready to believe that…
10. What is one small action that would support this new story? Choose one small, concrete step you can take—something you can do, stop doing, ask for, or allow.
11. If you could give this new story a title, what would it be?
Don't worry if you weren't able to change your story today. The stories that shape our lives rarely change all at once. Instead, give yourself permission to sit with these questions and see what arises. Often, our stories begin to loosen as we become more willing to notice them and question whether or not they still serve us.
